Careers for Applied Mathematics MS & PhD Graduates

MS Graduates

The Master of Science degree offered by our department is valued very highly. Most of our students obtain the degree in one year, allowing them to move on to the next stage of their career swiftly.  For some students, the Master of Science degree is a pathway toward a doctoral program.

In the last five years, approximately 95 students* have graduated from our Applied Mathematics on-campus Master of Science programs.  Of those students, at least 25 went on to pursue a doctoral program. Others have gone into industry. Below you will find samples of PhD programs attended and various positions obtained by our MS graduates.

PhD Graduates

Our students graduate with the knowledge, experience, and the ability to be leaders in a society that exhibits increasing demands for competence in communication, computation, and quantitative analysis. Applied mathematics encompasses some of the most diverse and interdisciplinary research in the physical, engineering, and biological sciences.  The skills our students obtain enable them to address the complex problems that society faces today.

In the last five years, 40 students have graduated from our doctoral program in Applied Mathematics.  Of those students, approximately 60% accepted postdoctoral positions in academia. Below you will find samples of PhD programs attended and various positions obtained by our PhD graduates.

Career Resources

The Erdős Institute

We are a departmental member of the Erdős Institute, which offers training programs and seminars in Data Science, Python, Software Engineering, and Career Exploration. Enrollment is free for all UW Applied Mathematics graduate students, postdocs, and graduate alumni (up until one year out from graduation.)

The Career & Internship Center

The Career & Internship Center is a valuable resource available to current UW students and UW Alumni.  Services include workshops and career fairs, resume help, and the job search tool known as Handshake.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn facilitates the ability for students to search for and connect with UW Alumni. Be sure to check out where our alumni work, noting the variety of career options.

Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) has a helpful resource on careers for applied mathematicians. They explore the types of problems applied mathematicians may work on, and introduce you to growing fields in industry.  Visit the SIAM UW website for details on the local chapter. Throughout the year, SIAM UW offers events geared toward career preparation.
